SOMEBODY’S BIRTHDAY
Mixing up the batter to a birthday cake,

Today’s somebody’s birthday.

Narrator: Hello, our guests! You are welcome to our celebration. We are going to celebrate Thanksgiving Day. Happy Thanksgiving to you!

Happy Thanksgiving to All”.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL

by Steve Millang

Happy Thanksgiving,
Happy Thanksgiving,
Happy Thanksgiving to all.
It’s time to show what we’re thankful for,
Our mothers, our fathers, our friends and much more.
The toys that we have
The things we hold dear to our hearts,
They’re part of this wonderful world,
The wonderful world that we share.
Let’s show that we care.

The table is set as we gather round,
With family and friends we all sit down
To the feast that we’ve made
Let’s all lift our voices and say,
"We’re part of this wonderful world,
The wonderful world that we share.
Let’s show that we care.”

Pupil 1: In the year 1620, a ship named the Mayflower brought 102 English men, women and children to the rocky coast of what is now Massachusetts, one of the 50 states of the United States of America. The ship’s passengers were Puritans – members of a religious sect which was unpopular in Britain because its members wanted to reform the Church of England. They came to America to found a community where they could practice their religion without interference.

Pupil 2: It was late in the year when the Pilgrims landed and founded the colony they called Plymouth. They had only the belongings that they had brought on the small ship. The winter was cold, and about half of the Pilgrims died. In the spring, with advice and help from the Indians, with whom they lived in peace, the Pilgrims planted corn (known also as maize) and other crops and prepared as well as they could for the next winter.

Pupil 3: In October 1621, to celebrate the good harvest, the Pilgrims held a feast which featured, among many other foods, wild turkey, which is native to North America. They called this their day of thanksgiving, held to thank their God for his blessings.

Pupil 4: The story of that Pilgrim feast is well-known among Americans. It is told and retold every year to young children in schools as one of the major American holidays approaches. The holiday is called Thanksgiving Day and is now observed on the fourth Thursday of November.

Pupil 5: Other nations have days of thanksgiving, too, but Thanksgiving Day has a special significance for Americans because it is traced back to that group of people who were among the first to come to the New World in search of freedom.

Pupil 6: Today, families – often including grandparents and aunts, uncles and cousins and grown children who live away from home – gather together, usually in a home but sometimes in a restaurant, for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. This almost always includes some of the foods served at the first Thanksgiving, roast turkey and cranberry sauce, plus sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie.

Over the River and Through the Wood.”

OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOOD
Over the river and through the wood
To Grandmother’s house we go.
The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh
Through white and drifted snow,
Over the river and through the woods,
Oh, how the wind does blow,
It stings the toes and bites the nose
As over the ground we go.

Everybody now:
Over the river and through the woods
To Grandmother’s house we go.
The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh
Through white and drifted snow.
Over the river and through the woods,
Oh, how the wind does blow.
It stings the toes and bites the nose
As over the ground we go.

Over the river and through the woods
And through the barnyard gate.
We seem to go extremely slow.
It is so hard to wait.
Over the river and through the woods.
Now Grandmother’s cap I spy.
Hooray for the fun is the pudding done?
Hurray for the pumpkin pie.

Звучит мелодия английской песенки "One Little, Two Little, Three Little Indians”, и все присутствующие в зале слышат характерные индейские крики. Это приближаются "индейцы”. Индейцы вбегают в зал. У одного из них в руках большой поднос с попкорном.

Indians: Hello!

Narrator: Hello, glad to see you, our friends. You helped us survive. Last winter was very hard and half of us died from diseases and hunger. You gave us some food and taught us how to live happily in this country. Thank you very much to you. You are welcome to our great feast.

Indian: Help yourselves! It is popcorn. It is very delicious.

Narrator: Thank you very much.

For health and strength and daily food
We praise thy name, O Lord.

Master of Ceremony: Let’s sing a famous Christmas song.

Silent Night”.

Santa Claus: Christmas is a religious holiday. It is celebrated on December 25 as the birthday of Christ. Christmas is a family holiday. All people try to stay at home and spend the time with their families. They send cards or Christmas greetings to their relatives and friends. Some families send and get dozens of Christmas cards.

Doctor Dolittle: Children sing carols and recite Christmas poems. They trim their Christmas-tree with strings of coloured lights and put glass and plastic ornaments on the tree. The presents are placed under it.

Hedgehog: Little children hang up their stockings on Christmas Eve. They believe that when they are asleep, Father Christmas (Santa Claus) comes to visit them.

White Mouse: He comes down the chimney with a big bag of toys. If the children are good, Santa fills their stockings with sweets, fruits, and toys. He puts some toys under the tree. On Christmas morning, the children look into their stockings to get a present.

Сat: Usually the whole family has a big Christmas dinner in the afternoon or evening. The traditional Christmas meal is roast turkey and Christmas pudding.

Jip the Dog: Sometimes English families trim trees outside their houses.

They place candles in the windows, which light the paths of singers who go from house to house singing the "glad tidings”. The air is filled with the sounds of Christmas songs, the stores are decorated in red and green, the traditional Christmas colours.

Master of Сeremony: Let’s sing our favourite song "Jingle Bells”.

Jingle Bells”.

Master of Ceremony: Listen to the Russian version of this song.

Master of Ceremony: We’ve got three kinds of Christmas pudding. Help yourselves, please.

Foreign Languages in My Family

We live in Russia and speak Russian. There are a lot of countries in the world. People in these countries speak their native languages. But most of them can also speak English because it is the most popular language in the world.

All my family is interested in foreign languages. My grandmother Yelena Davidovna learned French at school. Her teacher was strict and very talented. She taught her pupils to read books by French writers in the original. My granny entered the university after finishing school. She could speak, read and write French so well that the professors were amazed at her thorough knowledge of the French language. Nowadays she sometimes reads French books, newspapers and magazines and watches French films. She also enjoys English very much. She attended English courses after graduating from the university. English attracted her because of its wonderful pronunciation and mysterious word combinations. My granny sometimes helps me to do my homework.

My grandfather’s name is Vladimir Osipovich. He learned German at school but he didn’t like it at all. After graduating from the university he got interested in English. He was a great success. He started translating poems by some English poets and writing his own poems in English.

My mother’s name is Lyudmila Vladimirovna. She is a doctor. She learned English at school and knows it well enough to read medical articles published in foreign journals. Last year she was lucky to attend a scientific seminar in Greece. She used English to speak to her colleagues from other countries and discuss different problems.

As for me, I have been learning English for four years already. I like it. It is one of my favourite subjects at school. I usually speak English when I go abroad with my mother.

By Ilya Dubrovsky,

Form 6, School No. 381, Moscow

Nowadays it is very important to know foreign languages. Some people learn them to use them at their work, others learn them to read foreign authors in the original. Many people try to communicate with people from other countries and when they go on holiday abroad. English is an international language and most nations all over the world use it as their native, second or foreign one.

My parents are fond of travelling. They’ve been to Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia. Their English is not very good but they try to improve it by learning more words and phrases. I always help them because I’m keen on English. It is my favorite subject at school.

Learning any foreign language is not an easy thing. It is a long process that takes a lot of time and patience. This year I’m pleased to have English lessons 3 times a week. Earlier I had them only once a week. It was a great pity. But now I am quite happy. I have discovered a wonderful world of great English literature. I have read two books. They are Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe and Treasure Island by Robert L. Stevenson. I couldn’t translate some expressions and phrases (mainly idioms) but my teacher helped me overcome these difficulties.

English is necessary in my life. I work on my computer and use the Internet. Most of the websites are in English. After finishing school I’ll try to enter the university and graduate from it successfully. And I’ll study French by all means. I am sure if I know foreign languages well I’ll get an interesting job and earn a lot of money in the future. I’d like to visit the UK, the USA, Australia, France, Spain, Japan and learn more about these countries, their people and culture.
